Around the World with BlueCat
Around the World with BlueCat: London
Exploring London's screenwriting scene and the writers who are shaping British cinema.
London has always been a city of storytellers. From Shakespeare to Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the tradition of dramatic writing runs deep in this city's bones.
The London Writing Scene
The British film and television industry is experiencing a golden age. With productions from the BBC, Channel 4, and streaming platforms all hungry for original voices, there has never been a better time to be a screenwriter in London.
BlueCat has received submissions from London-based writers every year since the competition's founding. Many of our UK entrants have gone on to work in both British and American productions.
What Makes British Screenwriting Different
British screenwriting tends to favor:
- Character over plot. British scripts often let characters breathe, allowing scenes to develop through behavior rather than event.
- Subtext. What characters don't say is often more important than what they do.
- Specificity of place. The best British scripts are rooted in a particular world — a council estate, a seaside town, a London pub — and draw their energy from that specificity.
London Resources for Writers
If you're a writer based in London, consider these resources:
- The British Film Institute (BFI) offers screenwriting workshops and networking events throughout the year.
- The London Screenwriters' Festival brings together writers, agents, and producers annually.
- Many London-based literary agencies accept unsolicited screenplays — research and submit widely.
Whether you're writing from a flat in Hackney or a café in Soho, your London story is worth telling. We'd love to read it.
