BlueCat Screenplay Competition Announces 2016 Winners

LOS ANGELES, CA — Oreathia C. Smith’s screenplay, MONA. RICHY. ROBBY. AND RAY, has been selected as the winner of the 2016 BlueCat Screenplay Competition. Smith’s script was selected from 4,523 submissions and will be awarded a $15,000 cash prize. Smith received an MFA in Writing at USC in 2011.

The screenplay follows a black woman’s attempts to prevent another black woman from attending her white church.

Elizabeth Capot’s APART won for best short screenplay and will receive a $10,000 cash prize. 2,086 short submissions were received. Capot is currently a student at Emerson College.

BlueCat alumni include Aaron Guzikowski, writer of PRISONERS starring Hugh Jackman, who’s now working on remakes of PAPILLON and THE WOLF MAN, along with the next chapter in the FRIDAY THE 13th franchise.

Previous winners include Ana Lily Amirpour, currently in post on THE BAD BATCH for Annapurna Pictures, starring Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves, and Young Il Kim, who’s working on BILLIONS for Showtime.

Haydn Fox’s script TITLE IX won the Cordelia Award for best screenplay from the UK, with PARODY by Chad J. Nelson & Alexander Ellerston winning the Joplin Award for top international screenplay. The Roshan Award, given to the best screenplay from India, went to Paras S. Borgohain for his screenplay, DEEPEST, DARKEST OR HOW NOT TO LIE.

Each international winner receives a $2000 prize.

In addition, four feature scripts have been named as finalists, and will each take home a $2,500 prize:

  • Death of an Ortolan by Justin Piasecki

  • Dog by Conall Pendergast

  • Amara, 15 by Hannah Leshaw

In the Cradle of Granite by Jonathan Holmes

Three short scripts have also been named as finalists and each will take home a $2,000 prize:

  • I Sleep Easy by Tess Carroll

  • When We Run by Nikki Tran

  • Changelings by Nic Yulo
