Mika, a queer Indian-American is ashamed of her depression diagnosis and hides it from her unsympathetic immigrant family. But when her lifelong crush returns, she must choose between pursuing love or coming out a second time — this time as depressed.
Hailing from a community of hard-working immigrants, Mika’s family believes anything can be solved with a good dose of hard work and distraction— even mental illness. Naturally, Mika decides to hide her diagnosis and the side effects from her prescription. The otherwise sex-positive Mika, is now forced to rebuff all advances. However, when a chance at real love arrives, Mika will have to be honest with everyone — and herself.
Mrittika ‘Mou’ Sarin is a queer screenwriter and filmmaker, born in India, raised in the States and lived everywhere in between. She uses this cross-cultural fluency and outside-in perspective to explore complex people, identities and relationships. She is drawn to sad-funny character driven narratives because they allow one to look at serious topics in a comedic way.
She has a story by credit on NBC’s “Chicago Med” and has written on “Criminal Justice”, a BBC adaptation for India. She has recently finished directing a short proof of concept based on her climate thriller feature script “Scarce” with the support of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Athena Film Festival.
